The hymen is a thin band of tissue at the vaginal opening that can vary widely in shape, thickness, and elasticity from person to person. While often thought of as something that naturally “stretches” or resolves on its own, that is not always the case.
For some, the hymen remains partially or fully intact in a way that creates real, ongoing challenges, such as making tampon use difficult or impossible, causing pain with attempted intercourse, or leading to a sense of obstruction that interferes with normal function.
In certain cases, it can even prevent menstrual flow from exiting the body properly, resulting in significant discomfort and medical concern.
A hymenectomy is a minor surgical procedure that carefully removes or reshapes this tissue to allow for normal, comfortable function.
